A listing for a KFC Tower Burger, with a retail price of about $10, has reached $75 on Trade Me.
Takeaway stores and all other non-essential businesses remain closed in New Zealand, with the country in national COVID-19 alert level 4 lockdown until at least Friday.
So one Auckland Trade Me user is taking advantage, listing a "super-rare two-day-old Tower Burger" to Trade Me on Thursday - about 48 hours after New Zealand entered alert level 4.
"KFC Stacker Tower Burger semi-NEW CONDITION!!!! Selling on behalf of owner who purchased burger… at 4:05 pm, Tuesday, August 17 in anticipation of potential lockdown," the listing says. "Burger has been kept in [the] fridge since purchase and has been frozen as of this afternoon."
The burger has attracted some interest, with 29 bids made as of 8:30pm Tuesday. The highest one is now $75, with the last bid made on Monday night.
"Looking for collector/buyer who has [a] full appreciation of such an item," the listing continues.
"All proceeds will go to Barnardos to assist with the amazing work they do for NZers."
Selling old takeaways appears to have become a trend during the latest COVID-19 lockdown. On Wednesday, New Zealand's first day at alert level 4, another entrepreneur listed a bucket of "yesterday's KFC" for sale on Facebook Marketplace.
