If you're anything like me, toast and peanut butter is a morning ritual like black coffee and a green juice is for other, more sophisticated 24-year-olds. Toast is a breakfast staple for a reason - it's quick, convenient, and works with both sweet and savoury toppings.
But like anything, basic bread with a selection of spreads for brekkie can become boring - so why not transform your morning toast with a new trend taking TikTok by storm?
Custard toast is relatively quick and simple to make, but offers a fun take on traditional toast. It's basically like eating dessert for breakfast, but is a healthier option than other sweet brekkies like French Toast or waffles. You only need a handful of ingredients - bread, egg, Greek yoghurt and maple syrup - plus any toppings you wish to add.
To make the custard, whisk one egg, a few spoons of Greek yoghurt and a dash of maple syrup in a bowl - you could add a couple of teaspoons, depending on how sweet you like it.
Next, take your bread and using your fingertips or the back of a spoon, indent the soft part of the bread to create a well. Spoon your custard into the well and add your toppings of choice - berries or chocolate chips are good bets. Then simply bake in the air fryer or oven (180C) until the custard is set and caramelised and the toast is golden - around 12 to 15 minutes.
If you don't have maple syrup, you can use other liquid sweeteners such as honey or golden syrup. Others who have tried the recipe have also suggested adding a drop of vanilla extract or a dash of cinnamon to the custard for extra flavour.
For an extra sweet spin on the custard toast, TikTok star Cooking With Ayeh suggested adding melted Biscoff spread to the custard - yum.
Other suggested toppings include strawberries and white chocolate or blueberries with banana - or adding extra sweetener or chopped nuts on top.
And for the ultimate indulgence, perhaps pair your custard toast with a creamy Dalgona coffee, the whipped treat that made waves in 2020.
