The Office star Mindy Kaling said she felt "fraudulent" at her very first Met Gala.
During an interview with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex for her Archetypes podcast, The Mindy Project actress, 43, discussed her love of fashion, and in particular, bold colour combinations.
But while Kaling said she is generally confident in her outfit choices, she recalled feeling particularly vulnerable when she stepped out at the prestigious annual fashion event, the Met Gala, in New York in 2012 wearing a custom-made purple Lela Rose gown.
"I did feel, like, fraudulent the first year I went. You don't know the secret things you're supposed to do - when I went I was staying downtown with a friend," she said.
"I didn't know you were supposed to stay uptown near the Met. You're supposed to get in a standing van so your dress doesn't wrinkle. I was just in a cab, in my dress, sitting in the backseat of a car, you know, driving for 45 minutes."
Kaling admitted she only later learned how celebrities are able to arrive at the event without a single crease in their couture.
"I didn't realise until I got there, 'Oh, this isn't how Cate Blanchett and Rihanna are coming to the Met'," the producer, who famously portrayed Kelly Kapoor in the sitcom The Office, continued.
But while Kaling conceded to feeling out of place at the star-studded gala, she insisted she doesn't suffer from imposter syndrome; the inability to believe one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved.
"No, because I was at The Office for eight years. If I didn't think I could do this job at this point, I have to be clinically unconfident," she added.
Kaling has since attended the Met Gala on four other occasions.
