Apple today unveiled its new iPad, iPad Pro and Apple TV 4K units, which are set to be released in New Zealand over the next fortnight.

The latest entry-level iPad marks the unit's first redesign in five years as it does away with the home button and thicker border of previous models.

The 10th generation iPad also ditches Apple's Lightning cable port, replacing it with the increasingly ubiquitous USB-C.

The new basic iPads are powered by the A14 Bionic chip and also feature a relocated selfie camera, a 10.9-inch 2360x1640 Liquid Retina display, along with Wi-Fi 6 and 5G support.

Only the first generation Apple Pencil can be used as a stylus, but a new Magic Keyboard Folio can also be purchased that now features a click-anywhere trackpad.

Available in four colours - silver, yellow, pink and blue - the new basic iPads will be available in Aotearoa from October 26, starting at $899.

The big news with the new, sixth generation iPad Pro is that it's powered by Apple's M2 chip, first debuted in the latest MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro models earlier this year.

This year's iPad Pro model also features Wi-Fi 6E support and a new 'hover' feature that detects the Apple Pencil when it's positioned slightly above the screen, similar to technology already offered in Samsung phones and tablets.

"Apple Pencil is now detected up to 12mm above the display, allowing users to see a preview of their mark before they make it," Apple said in the product announcement.

"This also allows users to sketch and illustrate with even greater precision, and makes everything users do with Apple Pencil even more effortless."

The new iPad Pro will also be available from October 26 and offer two colour options, silver or space grey.

It starts at $1649 with 11-inch and 12.9-inch models available, offering 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations.

The updated Apple TV 4K model comes with the A15 Bionic chip, support for HDR10+ and an updated Siri Remote, with availability beginning November 4.

It's set to compete with the likes of Amazon's recently released Fire TV Stick 4K Max and Google's Chromecast devices.

Apple said the more powerful chip running its new unit gives it "faster performance and more fluid gameplay" than previous versions.

"The new Apple TV 4K is designed to minimise its impact on the environment, using nearly 30 percent less power than the previous generation while achieving more powerful performance," Apple said in the product announcement.

"The efficiency gains of A15 Bionic eliminate the need for an internal fan, resulting in a more compact design and contributing to a 25 percent reduction in carbon footprint over the previous generation."

A 64GB Wi-Fi only version will launch for $279 along with a 128GB option with ethernet and Thread networking support will cost $319.

Pre-orders for the newly announced products opened today.
