A bride-to-be is caught between a rock and a hard place, with a questionable decision by her own mother causing her to dread her upcoming wedding night.
The 26-year-old woman, who is getting married in August next year, was dumbfounded after her mother revealed she had booked a hotel suite next door to the newlyweds - perhaps a little too close for comfort when you're consummating a marriage.
Taking to Reddit to share her predicament and seek advice from the internet, the bride-to-be explained her father had gifted the couple a suite at an upmarket hotel for their wedding.
When her mother found out, she decided she wanted the rest of the family to stay at the same hotel, promptly booking a suite for her and her husband - the bride's stepfather - and another for the bride's brother.
"My parents have been divorced for 23 years and have been doing petty things like this to one up each other my whole life," the woman said.
After asking her daughter which room she and her husband would be staying in on the night, the mother then requested she be situated in the room directly next to the bride and groom when booking for the rest of the family.
"Yesterday mum called me and wanted to tell me that she has now booked the suites and 'what nice staff there are at the hotel'," the woman continued. "They said it wouldn't be a problem to book her suite right next to [me] and hubby's suite.
"I don't know if I'm oversensitive or being unreasonable but if there's one thing I don't want, it's spending my wedding night with my mum in the next room."
It's safe to say the response was overwhelmingly in favour of the bride, with many branding her mother's behaviour as "creepy" and "intrusive".
"Sorry, your mum has zero boundaries. That is unnecessarily awkward," one commented, with a second writing: "It's not going to be the most romantic hotel in your city with your mum next door."
Readers also offered the bride-to-be their advice for navigating the uncomfortable situation, with several suggesting she cancel the current reservation and book elsewhere without telling her mother.
"It's a fancy hotel, so they'll have excellent guest services," another advised. "Explain the problem. Ask them to reschedule your reservation for your first anniversary. Tell only your dad what is happening and tell him again how much you appreciate the gift."
Responding to some of the readers, the woman gave further insight into her seemingly strained relationship with her mother, explaining she had moved three hours away from home "for a reason".
"It's not the first time she's done something like this," she claimed.
She also elaborated further on the sticky situation, writing: "The hotel cannot move my mum because [she] booked exactly THAT room and the receptionist said the room was available on that date.
"They did not release my information to her. Mum showed me exactly which room I would stay in and which date so she didn't have to say, 'can I have a room next to my daughter'. She only needed to say, 'can I have room A which is next to room B?'
"It's one of the most romantic ones in the city I live in," she added. "I don't want to let my mum chase me away."
Earlier this year, a woman horrified the internet after sharing photographs from her 1987 nuptials to her now ex-husband. In the photos, the woman and her former mother-in-law flanked the groom, both wearing white dresses with long sleeves, lacey puffed shoulders and V-shaped necklines.
Multiple Redditors admitted that if it were not for the bouquet, they wouldn't be able to tell who the bride and mother-in-law apart due to the extreme similarities in their gowns.
"MIL [mother-in-law] really wanted to be [the] bride. I'm now divorced from her son," the woman captioned the snaps. "I was young and naive. I guarantee that if that were to happen today, there'd be a huge red wine stain covering that dress."
