Kiwis are outraged over Tip Top's bombshell announcement that it's discounting two-litre tubs of two of its most iconic ice cream flavours, with some even saying the company has ruined their childhood.
On Friday, Tip Top announced that they will be discontinuing two-litre tubs of Cookies and Cream and Goodie Goodie Gumdrops.
The two flavours will continue in scoop shops, and the popular Cookies and Cream will continue in other formats such as Trumpet Colossal Cone, Memphis Meltdown, and also now for Kapiti tubs and multipacks, Tip Top said.
"As you all know, Tip Top's ice cream is always made with the best quality ingredients, including fresh milk and cream, and unfortunately, due to significant cost pressures relating to these items, we could not continue these two flavours in the 2L format without sacrificing the quality of our ice cream," Tip Top said.
"We will, of course, continue to look for options to make these flavours available again for Kiwis in a Tip Top tub format in supermarkets, at the same quality that they know and expect from Tip Top ice cream."
The move has proved confusing for some, as Cookies and Cream won the Kids' Choice Award at the New Zealand Ice Cream and Gelato Awards last month.
"I don't understand, Cookies and Cream is such a classic and iconic Kiwi flavour! I'm so upset. There goes childhood," one person responded on social media.
Many have expressed their heartbreak over the shock decision.
"Tip Top, you have broken my heart," one commented.
"Tip Top getting rid of Cookies and Cream and Goody Goody Gum Drops? My two favourite flavours? Oh this is PERSONAL," another tweeted.
"How can Tip Top choose this moment to completely destabilise New Zealand society?" a third weighed in, with a fourth adding: "I'll never forgive Tip Top for discontinuing Cookies and Cream."
Head of Tip Top, Ben Schurr, told 1News the tubs are in the process of being discontinued, with the last supply leaving the company's premises "sometime this month".
He said some stores are already out of the flavours.
