Kmart has recalled a baby teething toy due to a choking hazard.

The ANKO Teething Llama, which has been in Kmart's New Zealand stores since April, has been pulled off the shelves as of Monday.

Product Safety New Zealand said the cap on one of the feet can break off, which poses a choking hazard to babies and toddlers.

"The cap of one of feet can break free from the teether," it said in the recall notice, which was published to its website on Monday.

"If it comes free, it may pose a choking hazard to young children which can block airways and cause death.

"Stop using the teether, take it away from infants/toddlers and return it to your nearest Kmart store for a refund."
