The family of an eight-year-old boy in Australia has shared the devastating news of his death after a "pea-sized bump" on his leg turned out to be cancer.
Chandler Tran's family are heartbroken after their son died following a seven-month battle with the disease.
Chandler's parents first noticed the bump below his left kneecap when their son, who was seven at the time, was limping around their Sydney home.
"It was probably the size of a pea, but it was quite firm," they told 7News.
The family took a trip to the emergency department the following day, but an X-ray came back with nothing, so further testing was undertaken.
On May 4, Chandler was given the devastating diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. The cancer had spread from his leg to his lungs, where scans found large tumours and fluid.
The hospital recommended 29 weeks of chemotherapy and surgeries to treat the cancer, and months later Chandler had his leg amputated.
"That hospital ward became his home," his father Cong told 7News. "The nurses knew pretty much everything about him."
After almost six months of living in hospital, the doctors told Chandler's family the tumours had grown and his parents made the difficult decision to stop chemotherapy and bring their son home.
On Saturday, his parents confirmed Chandler had passed away.
"Chandler chose to leave us peacefully in his sleep at 2am on Friday, November 25," his family said in a statement on GoFundMe.
"He waited until everyone had come to say their goodbyes for the day, and then for Mummy to go to sleep before taking his final little breath.
"We already miss him so much."
