For anyone who vaguely keeps up with what's trending in the fast-paced world of fashion, you'll probably know the naughty noughties have had an unprecedented resurgence in recent times.
Yes, the trends everyone swore would never be repeated (read: low-rise pants, velour, micro-minis, and waist belts - sometimes all at once) at the turn of the decade have somehow shimmied back into mainstream fashion. But let's not beat around the bush (or the baguette bag): some of these trends should've never reared their butterfly-clipped heads in the first place, let alone made the mother of all comebacks.
One of these trends? The dreaded dress-and-jeans combo, which actress Katie Holmes, 43, decided to bring back at the 2022 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball red carpet last week - to thoroughly mixed reviews.
The head-turning ensemble paired loosely fitted, frayed denim jeans with a micro-mini 'boob tube' body-con dress and to top it off, she teamed it with a pair of black trainers.
To accessorise her look, Holmes - who starred in the early aughts classic Dawson's Creek - added a nose ring and styled her hair in tousled, beachy waves with simple, pared-back makeup.
Yes, in one foul swoop, Holmes - who shall now be referred to as Y2K(atie) - transported us all back to 2002 in some kind of weird timewarp.
The throwback 'fit channelled the likes of Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and Mischa Barton, all of whom donned the dress-over-jeans look during the now-infamous era. Other takes on the best-forgotten trend include skirts, even micro-minis, or long, flowing tunics over low-rise jeans, capri pants and culottes.
While the daring ensemble delighted some, others were not so eager to enter the timewarp.
Commenting on a carousel of photos of the 'fit shared to the popular fashion account Diet Prada, one said: "Does she have a stylist? If not please call me, if she does please do call me xoxo."
"Honestly, I kinda like it," a second argued, with a third agreeing: "I love it, I don't care."
"No we cannot bring back the dress jeans combo. NO," one flatly refused, which was echoed by a user who declared: "I WILL NOT go back!!!!! DO YOU HEAR ME???? NO!!!!!!!!"
If you want my unsolicited opinion, I think this throwback should be thrown back into the archives, but that's just me.
