Most of us will be aware of the Kardashians' alleged penchant for plastic surgery, but in a trailer for the upcoming session of their eponymous reality show, it appears Kylie Jenner has some regrets after - allegedly - going under the knife.
While the 25-year-old has not publicly admitted to undergoing cosmetic work, aside from revealing in 2015 that she had filler in her lips, there is speculation that she and her famous siblings have undergone a myriad of procedures - both surgical and nonsurgical - to help them achieve their coveted looks.
In the official trailer for season three of The Kardashians, which debuts on May 25, Jenner appears to call out her family's role in setting unrealistic beauty standards, telling her sisters: "All of us just need to have a bigger conversation about the beauty standards that we're setting."
It echoes Jenner's statement in an earlier teaser trailer, which featured her declaring: "We have huge influence. What are we doing with our power?"
In the new trailer, released on Friday, Jenner continued, "I don't want my daughter to do the things I did," before telling her friend Stassie Karanikolaou in a later clip: "I wish I never touched anything to begin with."
The apparent admission from at least one of the Kar-Jenners that the family do set unattainable standards of beauty is in stark contrast to their usual strategy. The clan has long had a reputation for skirting around unfavourable or negative commentary, with their mode of operandi historically being to ignore or deny. For example, at the Keeping Up with the Kardashians reunion, both Kim and Kendall rejected claims that the family promotes harmful expectations for women, maintaining they simply encourage "being healthy".
In other instances, the family opts to address controversies on their own TV shows; heavily edited platforms in which the Kar-Jenners and their matriarch, Kris, serve as executive producers, allowing the family to air only what they want to be aired.
Additionally, the Kardashian brand is built into the multi-billion-dollar beauty industry. Whether it's the Kylie Cosmetics lip kits, Kim Kardashian's shapewear enterprise, Skims, or Khloé Kardashian's Revenge Body TV series, the family profit from promoting standards of beauty: and it's hard to speak out against a system that is integral to their business.
The release of the trailer follows Homme Girls' interview with Kylie Jenner earlier this month, in which the mum-of-two again claimed that a "big" misconception about her is that she's undergone extensive cosmetic surgery - despite her appearance dramatically evolving over the years.
"I got lip filler, and it was the best thing I've ever done," she added.
Discussing her daughter Stormi, Jenner said she is "perfect the way that she is", adding: "I see my features in my daughter and my son now, but you know, my daughter looks like me. I get to see my beauty in her."
Speculation on the Kar-Jenners' cosmetic surgeries and procedures
There has been ongoing speculation that Kylie Jenner has undergone a number of surgical and nonsurgical procedures, with facial plastic surgeon Dr Gary Linkov suggesting she may have had a 'foxy eye' lift, a nose job, and fillers. Fans have also speculated that Jenner underwent a breast augmentation and BBL (Brazilian butt lift).
Despite this, Jenner told PAPER magazine in 2019: "People think I fully went under the knife and completely reconstructed my face, which is completely false. I'm terrified. I would never."
Jenner has only admitted to having injectables in her lips.
In the case of Kim Kardashian, Dr Linkov said he believed the reality star undergoes regular fillers and Botox, and suggested she may have also had a nose job, cheek implants, a canthoplasty, fat transfers, and potentially an endoscopic face-lift. However, Kardashian has repeatedly refuted rumours of cosmetic surgery, only admitting to Botox and laser procedures. Regarding her body, fans and commentators have speculated on the possibility of various injections and implants.
Kardashian has only admitted to having Botox, a non-invasive procedure, laser treatments, and injections in her behind - but only to help alleviate symptoms of psoriasis.
For Khloé Kardashian, Dr Linkov suggested the 38-year-old may have had cheek implants, a chin reduction, a nose job, a brow lift and buccal fat removal, among other possible procedures, as well as ongoing fillers and Botox.
