There's a chance to own an ancient 80 million-year-old dinosaur egg that will go up for auction on Saturday.
The rare cretaceous period fossilised dinosaur egg, estimated to be worth around $2000 to $3000 could have a new owner this weekend at Webb's auction house on Saturday.
The egg, from the Mongolian Desert, will be shown in Part II of the Peter Downey Collection alongside a number of other rare and "interesting" fossils.
Head of single-owner collections Caolán McAleer said Peter Downey "is an example of such an esteemed collector".
"Being one of New Zealand's most respected authorities in decorative arts, antiques, and jewellery."
Downey first started in antique shops when he was younger and went on to help establish Webb's auction house in the 1970s followed by working with Michael Hill for nearly two decades.
"The auction brings to market a hugely eclectic array of pieces, ranging from weapons (including rare Japanese swords, and 19th-century knives from the Democratic Republic of Congo), to Cloisonne pottery, oversized crystals, and Art Deco Chiparus bronzes."
Part II comes after a "highly successful Part I sale in 2009, where buyers snapped up several hundred thousand dollars worth of items.
