Public service announcement: as of today, Krispy Kreme is giving away free doughnuts to celebrate its five-year anniversary in Aotearoa.
If you're in need of a tasty treat or a pastry pick-me-up, you can swing by your nearest Krispy Kreme store for an original glazed doughnut on the house from today until Sunday - with just one catch.
To secure your sweet treat, you must say the magic words: no, not 'please' and 'thank you', although that never goes amiss.
"Krispy Kreme is inviting all Kiwis to make their way down to their closest Krispy Kreme store, and simply say the magic words, 'Hip Hip Hooray,' to receive a delectable original glazed (OG) doughnut for free," a rep for the coffeehouse and bakery said in a statement.
But here's a little not-so-secret tip: If you shout, "Hip Hip" in-store and get anyone (except Krispy Kreme staff) to respond with a resounding "Hooray", you'll be gifted a four-pack of OG doughnuts for your efforts.
If you don't have a brick-and-mortar Krispy Kreme near you, you can still join the festivities online: on Friday, the promo code 'HIPHIPHOORAY' will score you a dozen OG doughnuts for $15.
"Over the past five years we've had the pleasure of spreading joy across New Zealand with our delicious doughnuts, and it's all thanks to the incredible support of our dedicated customers, and of course our amazing staff," said Olivia Sutherland, marketing director at Krispy Kreme ANZ.
"As we mark our fifth anniversary in New Zealand, we look forward to expanding our presence in this remarkable nation. With new stores and an ever-expanding range of doughnuts on the horizon, we're excited to see what the next five, 10, 20 years will bring."
The first Krispy Kreme in New Zealand was crafted back in 2018 at its Manukau branch in south Auckland. As a major US doughnut-and-coffee chain in Aotearoa, it competes with the likes of Dunkin' Donuts and Southern Maid Donuts.
The first-ever Krispy Kreme originated in 1937 in North Carolina, US, where the recipe for the iconic original glazed doughnut was created.
There are currently five stores across Auckland: in Manukau, New Lynn, Westfield Newmarket, Chancery Square, Westfield Albany, and at Auckland Airport's Domestic Terminal.
