Another awards ceremony, another opportunity to embody our inner Tim Gunn and critique Tinseltown's red carpet couture. This time it's the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, celebrating the best of the American and international television industry.
It marks the third major Hollywood event in just eight days, following last week's Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday. The Emmys had been delayed by four months due to the actors and writers strikes that dominated 2023.
With the cream of the small screen currently gathering at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater, there's already been plenty of razzle-dazzle on the red - well, actually silver - carpet. Red continues to be a popular hue, with the likes of Sarah Snook, Camila Morrone and Katherine Heigl all donning various shades of scarlet. Of course, black is always omnipresent, with several stars opting for all-black ensembles but more interesting silhouettes, such as Liv Hewson's shirtless pant suit and Ayo Edebiri's leather Louis Vuitton number.
Ivory and champagne shades have also been popular choices, while shimmer and sparkle never go out of awards season style. Floral embellishments have been spotted on several designs, from host Anthony Anderson's flower-power jacket to Simona Tabasco's three-dimensional extravaganza and Jenny Ortega's sheer gown with floral applique. Donald Glover also cut a suave figure in a black suit delicately embroidered with beaded floral designs.
Male guests have been putting their best feet forward: Joel Kim Booster teamed a sparkling bird brooch with his brown wool suit by Todd Snyder, while Reece Feldman added a little rock-and-roll to proceedings with a tuxedo sans shirt, silver necklaces and trailing black scarf.
However, for every sartorial success, there is also usually a fashion flop. See below for some of the red carpet's hits - and misses - so far.
This story will be updated.
The hits
Simona Tabasco
The White Lotus' Simona Tabasco stunned in a 3D floral collaged creation by Marni.
Aubrey Plaza
The White Lotus star Aubrey Plaza wore a pale yellow dress from Loewe's Spring-Summer 2024 collection featuring an oversized sewing pin.
Rachel Brosnahan
Rachel Brosnahan, nominated for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, was a stand-out in her structured wine-coloured Versace.
Reece Feldman
Content creator and TikTok star Reece Feldman added a little rock-and-roll to proceedings with a Saint Laurent tuxedo - sans shirt - silver necklaces and a trailing black scarf.
Joy Sunday |
The Dear White People and Wednesday actor looked flawless in a white off-the-shoulder creation with a double train and bell-bottom trousers by Safiyaa.
Liv Hewson
Yellowjackets' Liv Hewson, who opted out of gendered acting categories, went shirtless under a State Property black wide-leg pant suit with a double train.
Joel Kim Booster
Fire Island writer and star Joel Kim Booster teamed a sparkling bird brooch with his brown wool suit by Todd Snyder.
Padma Lakshmi
Television host Padma Lakshmi looked like a goddess in green with her Marchesa gown.
Ayo Edebiri
The Bear star Ayo Edebiri rocked an eye-catching silhouette in a custom 3D-molded Louis Vuitton leather gown by Nicolas Ghesquière.
Camila Morrone
Daisy Jones & the Six star Camila Morrone wowed in a simple, form-fitted red gown by Versace.
Issa Rae
Issa Rae's fun, feathered Pamella Roland Spring-Summer 2024 creation made a splash among the more understated looks.
Selena Gomez
Only Murders in the Building star Selena Gomez stunned in a custom burgundy Oscar de la Renta gown of sequinned ferns, which according to the fashion house, features over 450,000 paillettes and took 930 hours of hand-embroidery.
Colman Domingo
Fear the Walking Dead's Colman Domingo cut a suave figure in custom Louis Vuitton with Reza jewels.
Donald Glover
Donald Glover, nominated as a writer for Swarm, was another who rocked floral embellishments in a Bode velvet suit with beaded detailing.
The misses
Ali Wong
While Beef star Ali Wong - who won lead actress in a limited series or movie - hit the flower-power brief, the Louis Vuitton ensemble failed to flourish among the other stand-out looks. The mishmash of spangles, mesh, zippers, and floral print confused the eye, resembling two different dresses jumbled together. The chandelier earrings also overcomplicated the already busy design. As Coco Chanel once said: "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off."
Suki Waterhouse
While it's clear the pregnant Daisy Jones & the Six star's baby bump was the highlight of the look - in the vein of Sienna Miller's two-piece at London Fashion Week or Rihanna's iconic maternity style - the Valentino gown didn't quite deliver. While Suki looks stunning in red, the oddly placed bow was the cherry on top of a love-it-or-hate-it look that was half Christmas present, half kitchen apron.
Kathryn Hahn
Tiny Beautiful Things actor Kathryn Hahn - nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie - opted for a Dior blouse-and-skirt combination as a point of difference, but the visible nude bra under the sheer collared shirt didn't scream red carpet glam. The frayed black bow also looked out of place.
