With most Kiwis slipping back into their work shoes this week, the thought of already planning your leave for the year ahead may not have crossed your mind.
But for those keen to make the most of their holidays and use their annual leave strategically, you could end up giving yourself even more time off.
In 2024, there are some mid-week public holidays that you could extend to make the most of a break from work when the opportunity arises.
Waitangi Day: February 3 to 6
This year Waitangi Day falls on a Tuesday, so if you are expected back at work on Monday, you can choose to avoid breaking up your holiday.
It could be a four-day break with plenty of time to do some outdoor activities or head away for a few days with the family.
Easter: March 29 to April 7
With Good Friday on March 29 and Easter Monday on April 1, it is an early start to the Easter break this year. People interested in staying out of office during the next week could round up a pleasant 10 days off.
Anzac Day: April 25 to 28
With Anzac Day falling on a Thursday this year, people booking the Friday off work could soak up a four-day weekend and still get to enjoy the lasting sunshine.
King's Birthday: May 31 to June 3
The King's Birthday will be marked on June 3, so for those who take the Friday off, they can receive a four-day weekend.
Matariki: June 28 to July 1
Wrapping up the first half of the year is Matariki on Friday, June 28, which you could make an even longer break if you book off the Monday.
Labour Day: October 25 to 28
To end the brisk winter months on a high note, people might be interested in celebrating with an extra-long weekend by taking Friday 25 off before also getting Labour Day off on the Monday.
Christmas and New Year: December 21 to January 5
The Christmas and New Year holidays all fall mid-week this year, so taking off the surrounding days could leave you with a refreshing break over the busy holiday season to prepare for 2025.
