People walking around the top of Auckland's Sky Tower or jumping off it with AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand will now have their thrillseeking pursuits captured via the cameras on an array of more than 20 mounted iPhones.

The resulting photos, along with an edited video optimised for social media, is then ready for the customers within minutes, thanks to the 'EpicShot' system AJ Hackett co-designed with development partner DWS.

It was added to SkyJump and SkyWalk this week after being used at other AJ Hackett sites in Taupo and Queenstown.

Dan Waugh, chief information officer for AJ Hackett Bungy NZ, told Newshub that using consumer mobile phones rather than professional photography equipment had to be done to keep up with what customers wanted.

"Customers were coming along and filming their friends and family themselves and going, 'well, what we're filming is better than what you're producing'," Waugh said.

"The iPhone has a really high quality camera, it meets our requirements around the processing side of it and it gets updated every year, so we can leverage Apple's investment and innovation.

"What we have now is a really high quality product, compared to what we used to have."

The previous system used DSLR cameras operated by a team of dozens with a setup cost approaching half a million dollars. An EpicShot is said to have a setup cost of around $30,000 and much of the process is automated.

The urgency with which customers are keen to upload images of their Sky Tower activities not only created demand for the new system, but also made it possible.

"The files are designed for social media, so they're not really large, high definition files and we can process them really quickly," Waugh said.

EpicShot will be added to other AJ Hackett Bungy NZ sites including the Auckland Harbour Bridge at a later date. The company says it is in discussions with supplying the system to other tourism businesses.
