A popular design of mug is being recalled across New Zealand due to a "manufacturing defect" that can lead to burns, lacerations and scalding.

Four colourways of the Two-Tone Demm Mug, sold by the clothing retailer Country Road, have been recalled by Product Safety on Wednesday.

The agency, which is part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), has urged anyone who owns the mug to stop using it immediately and return it to any Country Road store for a full refund, or a replacement in a different design.

The recall notice says the defect can cause the mug to unexpectedly break when hot liquid is poured inside, resulting in the base of the mug detaching from the body.

"A safety hazard has been identified due to a manufacturing defect in some mugs, causing the mug to unexpectedly break when hot liquid is poured into the mug, resulting in the base separating from the body," the notice says.

"This defect can pose significant risk, which can result in burns, lacerations, and scalding."

The solid colour Demm Mug currently retails for $21.90 and is a popular choice among customers; at the time of writing, the Demm Mug in Slate has 7059 reviews on the Country Road New Zealand website.

If you are unable to return the product, or if it has been sold or gifted to another person, the agency advises contacting Country Road via email at customerservice@countryroad.com.au.
