AM hosts dissolve into giggles as Lloyd Burr roasts Nicky Styris with 'childish' cursive handwriting practice

One wouldn't typically associate cursive writing with breaking wind, but the two somehow became a talking point among AM's co-hosts on Tuesday morning.

The unusual link came about as the hosts discussed the release of a Ministerial Advisory Group report that recommended reintroducing handwriting lessons, including cursive, in primary schools.

The report - which some educators say is politically motivated - is likely to inform the content of the revised English and maths curricula due later this year.

Lloyd Burr then took to a whiteboard to practice his penmanship - but couldn't help making newsreader Nicky Styris the butt of the joke.

"That was not the lesson I set for you!" fellow co-host Melissa Chan-Green cackled as the camera zoomed in on Burr's line of choice: "Nicky secretly farts", in both block letters and cursive script.

"I don't think you've ever written something so mean and so untrue," Styris said with a barely suppressed giggle.

"Is it though? We've got big cushions," Chan-Green deadpanned as she wiped away tears of laugher.

"There's actually a big hole in the middle of my cushion," Styris joked. "I may as well run with the story that you've written."

"Farts don't cause a hole in the cushion," Burr said, to which Styris hit back: "They do when they come out of my bottom."

The hosts dissolved into a fit of giggles, before Burr admitted he had been "a bit childish" with the gassy gag. He also admitted his cursive handwriting was "appalling".

It appeared the joke had blown over - until it was time for Styris to read the 7:30am news.

"Oh!" she exclaimed as a loud popping noise suddenly rang out, much to Burr's amusement.

"I'm going on strike."
