Canadian living in Seoul shocked by 'half pound block' of Whittaker's chocolate

A Canadian living in Seoul has revealed her shock after seeing a 250g block of Whittaker's for the first time.

The Canadian, who goes by Dr Ellie on TikTok, normally shares videos about her life in South Korea. But a recent video has caught Kiwis' attention, with Dr Ellie revealing her shock at the size of a block of Whittaker's chocolate - claiming she's only ever seen the confectionery sold in individual bars.

"I know we all say that Americans have really big portion sizes, but I'm from Canada and a normal size chocolate bar is 45 grams and a large size chocolate bar is 100," Dr Ellie said in a video posted to her account.

She said a co-worker had family visiting from New Zealand and they brought several blocks of Whittaker's as a gift.

"This is 250g, this is half a pound of chocolate," Dr Ellie said, holding up a block of the Berry and Biscuit flavour.

"They pulled up with like 10 of these. I'm like, do you want me to break some off? Is this normal in New Zealand? Someone please tell me," she asked.

Kiwis were quick to rush to the comments and point out that the block is meant to be shared and not eaten in one sitting.

"I'm from New Zealand. This is normal. We don't eat it all at once," one person said.

"It's called a block of chocolate (it's not meant to be eaten in one go). We usually eat a row at a time," another said.

"Ah okay! I don't think I've seen chocolate sold in 'blocks' in Canada, just bars," Dr Ellie replied.

Meanwhile, some Kiwis joked that while the block isn't meant to be a single serving size, sometimes it turns out that way.

"Ah yes, the family block that I definitely don't share with my family," one joked.

"You're not supposed to eat it all in one go but I would bet that every New Zealander has or will at some point in their life," another added.

She's not the first foreigner to be baffled by New Zealand. In 2023, a TikToker went viral after sharing the 'everyday things' in Aotearoa that simply "don't exist" back in the US.

Haseya, a musician and bartender from California, took to TikTok to share his musings on three things he had never heard of before moving to New Zealand, with the video quickly amassing over 140,000 views.

Addressing the camera in his car, Haseya began by noting that the ever-popular drink lemon, lime and bitters - also known as LLB - "does not exist in America", followed by the cultural Kiwiana icon L&P, or Lemon & Paeroa, which he described as "a really common soft drink".

The third "everyday thing" on Haseya's list that "doesn't exist" in the US was a savoury pie - practically a smoko institution here in Aotearoa.
