Chrissy Teigen has once again found herself in hot water - not for allegedly copying a New Zealand small business or cyberbullying, but this time, for the colour of her bath.
The model, 38, has had a storied yet often strained relationship with social media, with resurfaced tweets of her bullying media personality Courtney Stodden leading to her "cancellation" in 2021.
In 2022, the mum-of-four also came under fire online for allegedly copying cult favourite Auckland bakery and cake shop, The Caker, after the two collaborated on a baking kit mere weeks earlier.
Now, Teigen is experiencing backlash for her murky bathwater, after husband John Legend shared a clip of her in the tub with his almost 16 million Instagram followers on Tuesday.
The model was filmed vigorously exfoliating her skin in an apparent plug for Legend's skincare brand, Loved01 - pronounced 'Loved One'.
"Sometimes you gotta exfoliate! @chrissyteigen's favorite @loved01skin product," Legend captioned the clip, which included a close-up of the Exfoliating Cleanser product.
In the video, Teigen clarified that she was "getting rid of [her] body makeup" as she scrubbed her leg, the remnants of the product clearly colouring the water a muddy brown.
Despite this, many viewers took to the comments to question why the bathwater was "dirty" - prompting Teigen to defend herself.
"The water is dirty because I'm getting my body makeup off, like I said in the video my sweet angels," she reiterated in a comment that has since been liked almost 12,000 times.
Others took issue with Legend filming his wife in the bath, with several questioning why he felt the need to share footage of her in a compromising position with his millions of fans.
"This could've stayed in John's phone," one declared, with a second adding: "Why? Why are we seeing your wife naked?"
"IDGAF if it is makeup. It looks dirty," a third weighed in, while a fourth commented: "That water really is disgusting though, whether it's exfoliating, body makeup or whatever. Yikes!"
However, the backlash was met by a swathe of defensive fans who bemoaned critics' inability to "listen or read" for the necessary context.
"I was concerned for a minute about the colour of that water - which is why listening and reading is necessary," one hit back.
"Wow, people really don't read or listen do they," said another, while a third declared: "Once again this proves society and people react and comment without full context. Idc [I don't care] if you like it or not. She said what she was doing, and people are commenting based of what they see vs what they hear and see. Context is key."
Teigen also clapped back at her critics on her Instagram Story, responding to one fan who urged her to "please take a shower next time".
"I was soaking my body makeup off then showering but thank you for your tips, thank you for the tag," she deadpanned, before writing in capital letters: "TUBS ARE NOT FOR BATHING. The internet is unhinged."
Last year, reality TV royalty Kourtney Kardashian was also picked apart by internet sleuths for a "dirty" detail in the setting of her Instagram snaps.
A then heavily pregnant Kardashian had posed in a bedroom for a series of sultry pics that showcased her baby bump in a netted dress and bikini set. However, nitpickers were more concerned about the stains that were visible on the bed's large cream-coloured headboard.
"Kourtney really posted her filthy headboard for the world to see," one said on Reddit, with another adding: "For a family so obsessed with how they're perceived and photoshopping literally everything they post, I'm so surprised this made the cut - nasty."
