MBIE recalls swathe of children's items over risk of choking, 'severe' burns

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is recalling multiple items over non-compliance with battery safety regulations.

Its recalls include Crocs LED Jibbitz, Infinity Digital Notepads, Get it Now LED Keyrings, Sunset Lamp Rainbow Party Lights and Mooloola LED Flyers.

The products don't appear to align with New Zealand's button battery product safety policy statement, MBIE said. Suppliers selling items with button batteries "must take reasonable steps to ensure that their products limit access by children" and "highlight the potential risks to parents and caregivers", the ministry said.

MBIE said the items posed "a risk of choking, severe internal burn injuries or death to young children if they gain access to the button/coin batteries and swallow them or place them inside their body".

All the products were sold at City Beach.

"Severe or fatal injuries can happen in two hours or less, and consumers may be unaware that the product contains button batteries," MBIE said.

"All affected consumers have been notified... Consumers should immediately cease using the subject products and store them out of reach of children.

"Consumers who have purchased these products are able to receive a full refund in respect of their purchase(s) from the supplier."
