An "occasional" Porirua Lotto player has struck gold, confirmed as the winner of $1 million in the First Division draw at the weekend.
The man, who wants to stay anonymous, bought his ticket online on Saturday night.
He put on a movie and forgot about the draw - but when it finished he checked the results on his phone.
“It was a surreal feeling watching the numbers roll down and match the ones on my ticket one by one," the man said.
It's not the first time Porirua locals have struck gold this year - a retired Porirua couple nabbed $7 million in Powerball winnings in March.
"By the time I had four numbers, I started laughing, and when all six matched, I thought, hang on, there’s something wrong with my phone.
A pop-up read 'You've won $1,000,000!'
The man said he then stared at his phone for 20 minutes in disbelief.
"I had to count all the zeroes to make sure it wasn’t $1,000," he exclaimed.
After lodging out a prize claim form, he rang his mum which brought him back to earth.
“She didn’t believe me initially, so I sent her a screenshot of my ticket. Once she counted all the numbers and realised it was real, she immediately told me not to tell anyone!” he said.
He added he was up until 3.30am, prioritising how to spend his winnings.
First on the list is helping out his whānau, and he also said he intends to keep working.
"I love my job. This win is a nice bonus for me.”
The winning ticket was sold online on MyLotto for the prize which was drawn on Saturday 3 June.
