Lotto: $30 million Powerball winner not from Carterton after all

It turns out Saturday's lucky Lotto winner is not from Carterton after all, instead hailing from our capital city Wellington.

Following the $30 million draw, Lotto NZ announced the millions went to someone who bought their ticket from MyLotto online in the small Wairarapa town.

The news had Carterton locals celebrating, with Mayor Ron Mark telling Newshub he was stoked for whoever it might be.

"It's just nice to know someone in the community has had some good fortune and found that pot of gold at the end of the Carterton rainbow," he said.

But it turns out that was a mistake - and the winner is actually from Wellington.

When a person signs up for a MyLotto account, they have to pick their region and then their city or town.

A Lotto spokesperson told Newshub the new multi-millionaire may have accidentally chosen Carterton as their town. More details about the winner are expected in coming days.

Wherever they are, the winner is $30.16 million richer after winning a life-changing Powerball First Division. The prize was made up of $30 million from Powerball First Division and $166,667 from Lotto First Division.

The winner is New Zealand's fourth Powerball multi-millionaire of 2024, and the win comes just one month after a $12.3m Powerball prize was won by a couple in Otago.
