The defence in the Scott Guy murder trial made its closing address on Friday.

Defence lawyer Greg King urged the jury to "scratch below the surface" of the case.

His client, Ewen Macdonald, is accused of murdering his brother-in-law and business partner with a shotgun on the morning of July 8, 2010. Macdonald denies the charge.

Mr King says the mystery is "not solved" and there is nothing that links Macdonald to the scene of the murder.

"The motive don't fit, the gun don't fit, the bike don't fit, the shoes don't fit, the risk don't fit."

He says Macdonald would not kill Mr Guy because it affected the entire family, including his own.

"The crime of killing Scott Guy was also a crime against the family... it was against Ewen Macdonald's own children," he says.

"Is there any evidence in the world that he despised his own wife and children so much that he would leave them for the rest of their lives wondering if he killed their uncle?"
