A tip-off about illegal drugs led to an armed police raid in the small Otago town of Cromwell today.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man for possession of methamphetamine and utensils, but found no evidence of a clandestine lab they'd been told about. A woman was also taken into custody for questioning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie was pleased to discover there was no lab, and no risk to the residents.

"We take all relevant precautions when it comes to acting on information around alleged clandestine operations and, in this case, we are pleased with the result."

Information about illegal activity can be left with Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
