'Good Bitches' baking group helps those in need

Two Wellington friends have come up with a recipe for happiness, and it's proving a huge success.

Nicole Murray and Marie Fitzpatrick started baking treats for people in need last year – just the two of them – but they were soon joined by hundreds of bakers countrywide.

Not Nigella, just a Good Bitch – for the record, Good Bitches is their official title.

"So that's the sort of term we use when somebody just gets in there, gets stuff done, doesn't draw too much attention to themselves, that kind of thing," says Ms Fitzpatrick.

"It's the highest praise in our book, yeah, huge compliment in our universe."

Good Bitches Baking was launched by good mates Nicole Murray and Marie Fitzpatrick in Wellington last year.

Ms Fitzpatrick and Ms Murray wanted to give people a moment of sweetness, happiness, during tough times – a homemade baked treat.

"A little bit of kindness can get you through a day that you didn't actually think you could get through," says Ms Murray.

It was just the two of them, but now there are more than 300 volunteer bakers aged 14 to 70 countrywide.

Already, they've whipped up 35,000 treats, the ingredients, and a handwritten note is always included.

The latest recipients are men at the night shelter.

"It's not a judgemental service; they simply donate out of the goodness of their heart and the second thing is the guys really appreciate the donation. It shows somebody cares as well," says Mike Leon, Wellington Night Shelter Manager.

For some, it's their first taste of home baking ever.

"We have had hugs, tears, standing ovations; it's pretty cool," says Ms Murray.

Also there's a chance they will become a charity and they have only had three complaints about their name.
