Armed police have seized property and charged two people over illegal hunting in Otago.

An armed offenders squad (AOS) raid in the Ida Valley area earlier today ended with the arrest of a 27-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman on 12 charges including unlawful hunting, trespass, unlawful possession of firearms and possession of cannabis. Two 4WD vehicles were seized along with a GPS and dog-tracking collar.

Sergeant Derek Ealson took the opportunity to remind the public that all gun users need to be licenced or under the supervision of a licenced person to hunt. All hunting must carried out in approved areas or with a permit.

"Unlawful hunting is not tolerated and police will continue to work with land owners and the local community to help reduce the effect of unlawful hunting in the areas," he said.

Anyone who sees suspicious behaviour which could be poaching should contact their local police station.

The two accused, both from central Otago, will appear before the Alexandra District Court next week.
