Overnight snow has created hazardous conditions in Dunedin and turned the city's hill suburbs into an ice skating rink.
Many locals had to clip their chains on this morning due to black ice coating the roads, while others were out with water to clear their window screens.
At least one vehicle has gone off road, and motorists are advised to take extreme caution.
The polar blast has also affected the State Highway network and Dunedin's Northern Motorway was closed until 9:30am due to the risk.
SH94 between Te Anau and Milford Sound and SH93 between Mataura and Clinton have also been closed.
