Wellingtonians got a bit of a treat today with two humpback whales cruising around the harbour.
The pair were first spotted in Wellington Harbour before swimming into Evans Bay and then toward Matiu/Somes Island.
A convoy of curious people followed the mammals journey along the coast in their cars.
The Department of Conservation says they received a number of sightings this afternoon and believe the animals to be humpback whales.
The month-long annual whale survey in the Cook Strait which ended on Saturday saw the biggest number of humpbacks on record.
In total, 137 humpbacks were spotted, including a calf and a rare white humpback thought to be Migaloo which normally frequents the coast of Australia.
The survey also broke the record for the most whales spotted in a day - 27.
A spokesperson says the increasing number of whales will mean chances of humpbacks entering Wellington Harbour will increase.
It is likely the pair were migrating through New Zealand waters to the tropics.
