An Auckland couple celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary were shell-shocked when they opened a six-pack of supermarket eggs to discover not one, not two - but six double-yolks.
West Harbour residents Neil and Lesley Mahoney woke up today to celebrate their ruby wedding anniversary, with a cooked bacon and eggs breakfast for the family.
Mr Mahoney said he began cracking open the eggs and "they just kept on coming."
"We had one single [egg] from another packet so we were going for seven but ended up with about 13. So it became a very big bacon and eggs breakfast," he said.
Finding six double-yolk eggs in one carton is not that common, said Michael Guthrie of the Egg Producers Federation New Zealand.
"It’s quite unusual because of the way eggs are graded that you’re getting all of those eggs at once.
"If you’re taking them directly off a farm and straight out of a shed it isn’t but to get them in one pack in a supermarket would not be an everyday occurrence."
He said it happens when the very young birds start laying eggs.
The egg-static couple wed in 1975 in the Avondale Baptist Church.
"It made a great start to our 40th wedding anniversary. It was totally unexpected and very exciting," Mr Mahoney said.
The Otaika Valley Free range eggs were purchased from Pak'nSave Westgate.
