Connor Morris case: Drunken kick sparked fatal brawl

An Auckland teen has told the Connor Morris murder trial he was a drunken idiot who made a stupid mistake when he kicked a stranger in the head.

Mr Morris, the partner of Millie Elder-Holmes, was killed in the fight that followed.

Teenager Trevor Morunga threw a 21st birthday for his brother on August 2 last year. He spent the night drinking spirits and said he was an "eight out of 10" on a drunk scale.

After he and his brother and cousin got into a fight, they walked up their drive feeling "amped" and carried on drinking.

About an hour later they met three guys from another party. Mr Morunga offered to shake their hands, but instead kicked one of the men in the head.

He admitted he was being "an egg" and "idiot". It was "a stupid decision".

The three guys took off, saying they'd be back with Head Hunters.

Mr Morunga's family member, the accused Michael Murray, who appeared sober, told him to apologise and sort it out. He didn't want any trouble.

But minutes later the Head Hunters returned by the carloads, and there was a massive street fight.

Mr Morunga saw his brother and cousin being beaten. He said out of the corner of his eye he saw Murray with a stick. Murray ended up hitting gang member Mr Morris with a large sickle.

Mr Morris was probably dead before he hit the ground.

Mr Morunga saw him lying there, then watched Murray grab his younger brother and run home.

The police arrived, so Mr Morunga took off too.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to murder.
