An area of central Rotorua was cordoned off after a geothermal bore blew its top, spraying steam and water about 15 metres into the air.
Rotorua Lakes Council says once the unused bore has been shut down staff will investigate what made it blow.
The eruption began at around 1:30pm this afternoon.
No one was injured.
