The capital has been hit by gale force winds this morning, with gusts up to 140km/h in exposed places.
The weather made for a few bumpy landings at Wellington Airport and caused a number of delays.
The wind is expected to ease this afternoon as the front moves up the country, bringing with it heavy rain warnings for the Tararua Ranges and Taranaki.
