A cold weekend can be expected for most of the country this weekend, as a southerly flow makes its way onto the scene.

After a relatively warm start to this week, courtesy of subtropical air flowing across New Zealand, the weekend will feel like a return to winter with bouts of heavy rain in the north and west, and showers in the east.

Most of the country will be affected by adverse conditions this weekend, with severe weather warnings for heavy snow on the West Coast and Southland areas, and road snow warnings issued for most South Island passes and also for the Desert Rd.

The looming southwesterlies will also bring possible thunderstorms to western parts of the north and south of the country, beginning today and into Saturday and Sunday also.

MetService meteorologist, Robb Kerr says unstable weather can be predicted for all of New Zealand this weekend.

"We're in for a changeable few days and further severe weather warnings or Watches are likely to be issued as this situation evolves into the weekend".

For those going to the Warriors game in Wellington, expect cold weather and showers during the evening.

Mr Kerr says layered clothing will be a clever idea for those deciding to venture out into the weather.

"Any sensible person would be wearing three or four layers at least."

It isn't all bad news though; respite from the showers comes as we transition into next week as a ridge moves over the country from the west.
