Commuters using Auckland's Waitakere train station will have to catch the bus from Monday as the city's rail network goes completely electric.

A service has been running there for 133 years but has to stop because electric trains can't use the route.

The move has angered protestors who say the area has one of the highest population growths in Auckland.

Christine Rose from the Public Transport Users Association says Auckland Transport could have tried harder to find viable alternatives.

"We want to see Auckland Transport admit they've made a mistake in cancelling Waitakere rail services and to extend them to Huapai [and] Kumeu using a decent shuttle which we've called the Western Connector," she says.

The last train leaves the station at 11.30pm.
