It is a poignant evening for New Zealand's most well-known jeweller – Sir Michael Hill.
Tonight he is not only unveiling his 300th store in Auckland, but he is also handing over the reins to his daughter.
"It's a young person's world," he says. "Emma's very prepared, and I don't want to hold her back. She's very driven, like myself."
From November, Emma Hill will become chair of the family empire, and she has earned it – spending 30 years with the company, from the floor of the very first shop in Whangarei to heading the push into Canada.
In true Sir Michael style, he's already eyeing up his next challenge, stepping into the role of designer for the first time.
