Timaru police have been keeping a close eye on a slippery stranger who has been hanging around Caroline Bay since the weekend.
The visitor – a large elephant seal – is unlikely to break the law but he could still cause trouble.
A CCTV camera normally trained on the nearby skate park means police can keep an eye on the seal and the public from the police watch house.
"We found out that if we zoom in on the camera there we could locate the sea lion which is in that corner there," says Timaru Police Senior Constable Paul Hampton.
After three days of seal watch, he's already starting to think of names for the big creature.
