Loud and threatening thunder and lightning could be heard across Auckland and the North Island overnight, shocking residents.
The northern region was hit by more than 10,000 lightning strikes, with over 1300 hitting Auckland, Fairfax Media reports.
Winds were strong near Manukau Heads and the Harbour Bridge, with Pukekohe receiving 31mm of rain overnight, MetService meteorologist Rob Kerr told Fairfax Media.
The Fire Service says there were no callouts.
However today fine spells are expected, with the odd morning shower and south westerly winds.
Residents took to Twitter to express their shock.
Aucklanders can expect a high of 19 degrees throughout today and overnight low of 12 degrees.
