Prince Charles says he's "heartened" to see how far Waikato Tainui has come since his last visit to Ngaruawahia's Turangawaewae Marae more than 20 years ago.

The Prince of Wales and his wife, Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall, were welcomed onto the marae, just outside of Hamilton, at around 12pm today.

In his speech in front a crowd of hundreds and Kingi Tuheitia, Charles reminisced on the last time he visited Turangawaewae Marae in 1994, when Waikato Tainui was "poised to take a bold step".

"Being the first iwi to settle historical grievances under the Treaty of Waitangi," he said, "as I return here more than 20 years later, I'm so heartened to see and hear of all that you've grown from those new beginnings."
