Traffic is backing up in the main North Island cities as everyone tries to escape on holiday.
Traffic is heavy northbound on State Highway 1 (SH1) prior to Puhoi, and congestion in Warkworth and Wellsford.
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) warns motorists to expect delays and to consider taking State Highway 16 instead.
Moving south on SH1 a crash has caused the southbound right lane before Takanini to be blocked.
Traffic is congested in patches from Bombay on State Highway 1 to the SH1/SH2 link, NZTA says.
In Wellington there's heavy traffic heading north on SH1 around Paraparaumu and Otaki, and it's congested in patches along SH2 to Kopu.
