Former Trade Minister Tim Groser has revealed New Zealand needs a new embassy in the United States.

Mr Groser is preparing to leave New Zealand to take up his new high-profile role as the New Zealand Ambassador in Washington.

He told the Paul Henry programme the embassy is the centre of New Zealand operations in the US and needs to undergo a major facelift.

"Serious renovation is required and there's even discussion of the possibility of knocking it over," he said.

He says the plumbing and electrical systems are ruined.

The embassy hosts thousands of people each year.
