Auckland Airport's international terminal has been evacuated after a sprinkler caused what the Fire Service is calling "widespread flooding".

The alarm was raised shortly after 3:30pm today and the first floor is thought to be the worst-affected area.

Estaza Tavui works at Long White Cafe on the terminal's ground floor and says she was on her way to the staff room when she saw the flooding.

"It was bursting under the door," she says. "[It was] really brown and yucky, like rusted water."

Ms Tavui said the water was heading out of a room that is currently under renovations.

Staff and public were evacuated, but have since been let back in and a clean-up process is underway.
