A home in Napier has been "severely damaged" by a large fire, despite neighbours' efforts to put out the blaze.
Four fire trucks and more than 20 fire fighters were at the property on Napier Hill.
Neighbour Vanya Freijser says she smelled smoke just before noon. Her partner then called 111.
"We took our hose out and put some water over the roof and on our fence," Ms Freijser says.
But that effort was in vain as the property was quickly engulfed.
Central fire communications shift manager Murray Dunbar says no one was injured.
It's not known whether anyone was at home when the fire started, Mr Dunbar says.
Neighbour Joanna Smith says she initially mistook the smoke for dust.
"Then I realised it was smoke and then big flames started shooting out," she says.
"It then spread around the house, around the guttering and started coming out through the roof."
