There are concerns the spread of Dama wallabies in the greater Rotorua area is causing major damage to native forest and bush.
The wallabies were released in a small section near Lake Ōkāreka in 1912 and they've since spread across more than 180 thousand hectares.
The Bay of Plenty regional council's trying stop the population from taking over through a survey released to rural land owners.
The council's land management officer Dale Williams says he hopes the survey will help to identify how many are out there and where they are spreading.
"At the moment we don't really have the resources or the technology to do that so that's why we're focussing on limiting further spread at this stage."
He says the long-term goal is to completely eradicate them from the region.
