Some say the footage in this story is cruel, gruesome and just plain nasty.
We have been given new footage shot by SAFE, the animal welfare advocacy group, and it was filmed at rodeos across the country over the 2015-2016 rodeo season.
A petition to ban the practice is being presented to Parliament tomorrow.
Veterinarian Dr Elsa says it causes a lot of pain and distress to animals for the sake of entertaining people.
"There is no benefit for the animal at all," says the SPCA.
But there are others on the other side of the debate.
Former president of the Rodeo Cowboys Association Gary Jackson says rodeos are a way of bringing small towns big businesses, and offering riders the chance to learn, compete and train animals.
For some people it is a way of life and entertainment -- while others believe it is animal cruelty.
Should they be banned in New Zealand?
