The jury in the Auckland motel murder trial is now considering its verdict.

Teenagers Leonard Nattrass-Berquist and Beauen Wallace-Loretz are accused of bashing Ihaia Gillman-Harris to death in 2014.

The pair, both 18, say the 54-year-old sexually assaulted one of them and the judge has asked the jury to consider whether or not it believes that.

The teens had allegedly exchanged text messages where they talked about breaking Mr Gillman-Harris' legs and putting him in hospital.

Justice Kit Toogood says the jury has to decide whether the texts were just "gangster bravado" or whether it helps prove the beating was planned.
