Warriors and former All Blacks doctor John Mayhew has been placed in an induced coma after suffering a cardiac arrest last night.
Mayhew, who spent 131 Tests on the sidelines for New Zealand, collapsed during an exercise class before being successfully resuscitated and taken to North Shore Hospital.
A family spokesman said he was in a stable condition in intensive care.
Former All Blacks coach Laurie Mains said it was "devastating news".
"I just wish John and his family the very best for a speedy recovery. Apart from being an expert sports doctor, he always became a real friend of the players and management team. We just hope that he comes out of this," Mains said.
"He's certainly the best I've ever come across and I would say his reputation speaks for itself. It's not just rugby, he's gone across other sports and been a tremendous success wherever he goes."
The 61-year-old joined the Warriors after 13 years with the All Blacks and was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in this year's honours list.
Mayhew also worked with the 1990 Commonwealth Games team and with squash players.
He became a close friend of Jonah Lomu during the late star's battle with kidney disorder.
