Te Puea Marae in Auckland has opened its doors to homeless families from around the city.
A spokesperson told Newshub they are committed to providing short-term relief to vulnerable families as winter approaches, but that "trying to manage a homeless whanau situation is challenging and complicated".
To tackle the increasing numbers of families forced to live in their cars and in garages, the marae has established a support programme called Manaaki Tangata, and is working closely with other agencies, such as Mangere Budgeting Services Trust.
Last week, spokesperson Tuku Morgan told Newshub the marae will also be offering health checks and trying to help people into permanent accommodation.
Manaaki Tangata is also appealing for support from the wider community, including non-perishable food, warm winter clothing and blankets, as well as other accommodation options.
