Christchurch's big hand - creative or creepy?

A giant hand has found a new home on top of Christchurch Art Gallery after it was erected early on Thursday morning.

The hand, called Quasi, was craned on top of the building in the early hours of the morning, to a mixture of delight and confusion from Christchurch residents.

"With Quasi, Ronnie van Hout elevates the hand of the artist to monumental status in the regenerating city," the art gallery says on its website.

One woman says it wasn't her "favourite" art sculpture, but she did take a photo to show her husband later.

The sculpture was made by Kiwi artist Ronnie van Hout.

"Based on scans of his own body parts, van Hout describes Quasi as 'the artist's handmade giant'."
