Snow has hit parts of the South Island, bringing ski fields a much-needed top-up.

Roundhill ski area near Tekapo has been treated to some powder as well. Manager Simon Murrell says high winds and rain on Wednesday "wasn't great", but he's woken up to some fresh snowfall, giving them a 30cm base with help from the snowmakers.

"It's excellent," he says. "It's great to see the snow returning… and the conditions improving each day."

Early snow in May meant the ski field had been ready, but a dry patch put it back to square one - until now.

The snow is expected to last all of Thursday and into Friday.

"We've got wide-open trails here when we're open and not as many people skiing here as we'd like, so come on up," Mr Murrell says.

Canterbury is being tormented by strong winds, particularly in Methven, Darfield and Arthur's Pass. There is also a high winds warning along SH1 from Kaikoura to Blenheim. High-sided vehicles should drive with care.
