A Wellington man has used his cellphone to guide in a rescue helicopter after he badly injured his leg on a ride Tuesday morning.
The 24-year-old crashed on the Tinakori Ridgeline Track and suffered a serious leg injury.
The Life Flight Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called in but large trees made if difficult for crew to pinpoint his location.
Because of this, the injured man then spoke directly to a crew member on the helicopter to indicate when it was directly overhead.
The man was treated by a medic and then winched on to the helicopter from a height of around 40 metres.
He was stabilised and then flown to Wellington Hospital for further treatment and is now recovering.
